Horseback Riding
Horses are still a very important part of Costa Rican culture and its rural roots are evident in the on-going use of horses for real work as well as transportation throughout the country. So it follows that visitors to Costa Rica will find that horses are easily available for a wide variety of activities and adventures. A horseback tour is a wonderful way to see the untouched places in Costa Rica and an excellent opportunity for bird watching and spotting wildlife along the trail. Whether you want to take a leisurely sunset ride on the beach, trot through the cloud or rainforest, or take a multiday adventure through the northern zone, you can be assured that you will be able to rent horses just about anywhere. You will want to add a horseback riding tour to your Costa Rica itinerary.
Although it isn’t as much a problem in Costa Rica as it is in many other Central American countries, we would encourage you NOT to ride horses that appear malnourished, neglected/abused or appear to be on their ‘last leg.’ This would only encourage and reinforce the owner's idea that no one really cares, so what's the point of properly caring for the animal. But as I mentioned, this is usually not the case here, but just be aware. So saddle up and enjoy an extremely scenic and memorable ride just about anywhere you are in Costa Rica.
